Health Services Research Journal Announces New Editorial Leadership
Former U.S. federal health agency head Dr. Andy Bindman selected as new Co-Editor-in-Chief to help lead new era for journal.
CHICAGO, IL (February 21, 2018) – The Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET), the not-for-profit research and educational affiliate of the American Hospital Association (AHA), today announced new editorial leadership for its flagship journal, Health Services Research, adding a new Co-Editor-in-Chief and expanded team of senior associate editors. The announcement comes as the journal embarks on a multiyear effort to expand its reputation as a premier source of health policy and health care sciences information across the globe.
Andy Bindman, M.D., will join fellow Co-Editor-in-Chief, Patrick S. Romano, M.D., to lead the 52-year-old publication through a period of dramatic growth. Dr. Bindman is currently professor of medicine and epidemiology & biostatistics as well as a core faculty member within the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies at the University of California, San Francisco. A highly respected leader in both clinical medicine and health leadership, Bindman previously led the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and served as Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Bindman is also an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.
“Andy’s sterling reputation across policy, medicine and research brings an immediate boost to the quality of HSR’s editorial leadership during a time when health care leaders are demanding best-in-class evidence to inform what works in health care innovation and improvement,” said Jay Bhatt, D.O., President of HRET and Chief Medical Officer of the AHA. “Together with Patrick, and our talented team of senior editors, HSR will provide leaders and policymakers with a trustworthy source of evidence-based tools and insights for system improvement.”
Already a widely regarded journal for its rigor and original research, in 2018 HSR will begin efforts to improve the reader experience and enhance its utility for health system leaders. New features will include a more user-friendly look and feel, subject matter designed specifically for health care leadership, more empirical evaluations of important health policies, and opportunities for greater engagement among more diverse readership.
“I’m pleased to join one of the world’s top-ranked journals at such a pivotal time,” said Dr. Bindman. “There isn’t a better platform to bridge evidence-based research with what’s happening in care delivery and policy. I look forward to supporting HSR to further position the journal as a key source of evidence on health care services and knowledge about how to translate that evidence into practice and policy decision making.”
Rounding out the editorial team additions are several nationally recognized leaders in health policy and health services research. The new Senior Associate Editors include:
-
Austin Frakt, Ph.D., Director of the Partnered Evidence-based Policy Resource Center at the Boston VA Healthcare System
-
Shoshanna Sofaer, Dr.PH., M.P.H., Director of Strategic Research Planning for Health Policy Research at the American Institutes for Research
